Course Description

An extension camp for Yr 10 -12 young people in the Bega Valley Shire particularly fire affected students studying Agriculture, Geography, Earth and Environmental Science or related sciences interested in learning more about designing for fire retardance.
The Camp runs from 5pm Thursday afternoon 3 June to 1pm Saturday 5 June and full scholarship support to attend is provided with support from the Bega Valley Shire Community Fund and the Cobargo Community Bushfire Relief Fund.  Contact dean@thecrossingland.org.au to receive this
The camp starts on a dairy farm in Coolagolite with an evening bushwalk to a remote tent camp on the edge of the Badja Fire in Biamanga National Park to share stories of fire experiences. The walk to The Crossing the next morning looks at fire affected and fire protected areas and fire recovery. The camp tour focuses on design for fire preparedness and protection. Some fire design tasks in the afternoon of the second day include establishment of a fire retarding property shelterbelt.
Students are asked to bring their own aerial photo downloaded from google earth to draw on as they discuss fire retardant design for their own properties. The camp includes a night in a train carriage bunkhouse. River return by canoe to Bermagui on the last day for a 1pm finish at the Bermagui bridge boat ramp.
Since July 2020 The Crossing has been working with support from the Bermagui RFS to facilitate Badja fire edge road group discussions. Much experience has been shared at these gatherings and many good fire preparedness actions and design ideas have come from these community forums. This workshop builds on those learnings as well as research into long term wind rose data in the Bega Valley Shire, Australian and international shelterbelt design and Australian plant fire retardance information.
